Dark Quasar Rising (Friends of a Former Space Janitor Book 1) Kindle Edition

4.6 out of 5 stars 262 ratings

In the heart of enemy territory, Vanti must save the day without blowing her cover... or her cool.

Security for a reality star cruising on a billionaire's space yacht should be excellent cover for secret agent Lindsay "Vanti" Fioravanti. Her boss, the famous Elodie-Oh, doesn't care where they go, as long as it's viral.

Then Arun, the ship's owner and pilot, grabs an opportunity to do business on Gagarin--a planet emerging into capitalism with enthusiasm. Getting in on the new market is a huge risk, but could offer enormous rewards. And visiting Gagarin gives Vanti the chance to recruit new informants.

But when a shipmate is kidnapped, Vanti and Arun must come to the rescue. Can they do it without exposing Vanti's secret identity? And if not, who will feed the cat?

About the Author

I've been an IT guy, a choir director, an executive assistant, a stay-at-home mom, a college instructor, and that lady at the information booth in a tourist town. But writer is the best job ever, because I get to make stuff up. Stuff I wish were true, stuff I'm glad isn't true.

Julia Huni grew up in the Pacific Northwest. After college, she served nine years in the US Air Force. Over the years, she's been an IT guy, a stay-at-home-mom, a college professor, a NASA executive assistant, a NATO branch director, and that lady at the information desk in a tourist town. She's also played piano at church and studied Tae Kwon Do.

When she's not writing, she's baking, playing tennis with her family, knitting, or traveling. Sometimes, she even does more than one of those things at a time. This year she started CrossFit, and even her earlobes are sore.

I originally met Vanti in the fun Space Janitor series. She is the protagonist in this book and is hopefully starting a series of her own. Being written from Vanti's point of view means we are privy to her internal dialog, allowing her to be a bit more human than the expert security agent we've seen before. This tale is a good mix of characters from the other series, and new characters that fit this new story very well. There's plenty of action, some humor, and even a little romance. There is plenty of advanced tech, but nothing that stretches our credulity too far.
I'm glad I read this story and I'm hoping for more in this series.

I was worried. I loved the Space Janitor series. The character Vani is very well done. The revelations concerning Elodie and Arun worked well and will play well into future episodes, I'm really happy Helva is back. I miss Trianna and her hacking skills. A visit by some of the top-levs would be welcome. Well done series beginning. Hope the next one is just as good or better.

What can I say, back in action with Vanti, Elodie, Leo, and Apawllo. This time, they’re aboard Arun Kinduja’s ship headed to Gagarin (shades of the USSR). We also meet a new character - Helva - the AI for the shuttle attached to Arun’s ship. It’s a wild ride, spy vs spy, and all that jazz. I do love these books. Helva is a great addition to the gang, although there’s still much to be learned about her. The Dark Quasar name becomes apparent near the end of the book - no spoilers! I’m looking forward to the next one and hope that Apawllo plays an even bigger role because I just love this cat! It’s a fun read. You don’t need to have read the Space Janitor series, but it does help in terms of knowing the characters better. All I can say is “More!”

Just like the Space Janitor series, entertaining but G rated.

Easy to start, stop, and start again like for doctor visits.

I finished Dark Quasar Rising a couple days ago. This makes me sad because now I want MORE. The book does a great job introducing this new series while remaining true to events in the Space Janitor series. Vanti's snark, the ship's name, Elodi, and new character Helva, are but a few of the things that continue to make these stories so enjoyable. Now, I have to be reasonable and give the author time to produce the next book, instead of screaming "MORE, MORE, MORE. NOW, NOW, NOW!" I really enjoyed the book and think others will too.

The story is new as are some of the team members but we have to start somewhere, a nice little test for our new team .

Okay, we have a cast of characters we're getting to know from earlier adventures. There's multiple 'nations' in the galaxy with sort of familiar 'management'. Things are getting a tune-up, one adventure at a time.

I read this after reading Dark Quasar Ignites and it explained the characters a little better. The story was fast paced and believable, given that it's set in the future. I look forward to further adventures for the crew in future books.

Having read all available space janitor books I thought this was worth a punt but wasn't sure. Yep if you've read Julia's other works I can't see why you wouldn't love this too. If your new to her work there's back story to the main characters but it's not needed to enjoy this little space romp. Fingers crossed Dark Quasar returns
